The one- and two-storey stone houses that define Old Datça's identity are the work of stonemasons who skilfully laid the region's natural stone. Thick walls bound with khorasan mortar keep interiors cool in summer and warm in winter, while heavy timber lintels over doors and windows create structures resistant to wind and heat.
The door and window frames, lintels and roof beams of Datça's stone houses came from the carpenters' craft. Glazed windows and roofs crowned with Marseille tiles created a local building tradition that married stone walls with woodwork. Together with stonemasonry, carpentry is the complementary craft of Old Datça's architecture.
Datça is known for artist ateliers that carry the ceramic tradition of ancient Knidos into the present. Handmade earthenware plates, bowls and serving ware give a natural frame to the region's gastronomy while uniting craft with contemporary art. Ceramics are part of both Datça's table and its art culture.
What gives Datça cuisine its true flavour is the peninsula's own natural olive oil. The region's olive-oil tradition reaches back to a traditional stone press ("mengen") founded in Sındı Village in 1948 and continues today with modern mills. Olives and olive oil are a cornerstone of both Datça's table and its production culture.
Datça is known as the home of the finest of the "three B's" of local lore — bal (honey), badem (almond) and balık (fish). The peninsula's endemic flora and pine forests are the source of distinctively aromatic honeys. Beekeeping is an indispensable part of Datça's natural production culture and culinary tradition.
The windmills lined up in Datça's Kızlan village symbolise the labour of the millers who, for centuries, turned the power of wind into flour. Fine examples of traditional architecture with their wooden sails and stone bodies, the mills lost their function in the 1950s as motorised milling spread. Today one of them — now among Datça's emblems — has been restored true to its original form.
