The British archaeologist Charles Thomas Newton conducted the first systematic excavations at Knidos in 1857–1858, uncovering the plan of the ancient city. He found the famous "Demeter of Knidos", today in the British Museum; the colossal "Lion of Knidos" was also removed to London through his campaign. Newton's work brought Datça's Knidos into world archaeological literature.

Legacy

Newton is the figure who put Knidos on the agenda of modern archaeology; the artefacts he uncovered announced the peninsula's ancient wealth to the world. He represents the starting point of the scholarly discovery of Datça's cultural heritage.
