İbrahim Çiftçioğlu

Born in Çorum, İbrahim Çiftçioğlu graduated from the painting department of the Gazi Education Institute in 1973; after years of teaching he joined Marmara University's Atatürk Faculty of Education in 1986. With his figurative language, social content and original printmaking he became one of the recognised names of contemporary Turkish painting, holding more than fifty solo exhibitions. After retiring he settled in Datça and continued to work here in his own studio. He died on 17 March 2026 at the age of 74 and, in accordance with his wishes, was buried in İskele Cemetery near the grave of his friend Can Yücel.

The old prison building in Datça was restored and opened as the "Democracy House and İbrahim Çiftçioğlu Library", inscribing his name permanently into the district's cultural commons. He is an example of how a painter can leave a mark not only on canvas but on the cultural life of the place where he lives. Through the students he taught, his influence reaches well beyond Datça.
