Knidoslu Sostratos

Coming from the city of Knidos on the Datça Peninsula, Sostratus was the architect and engineer remembered for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The ancient authors Strabo and Pliny attribute the lighthouse to him; an inscription at its base is said to have identified him as "Sostratus, son of Dexiphanes, of Cnidus". At over 100 metres tall, it remained one of the world's tallest structures for more than a millennium.

Inscribing a Knidian architect's name into world engineering history, Sostratus is further evidence of Datça's ancient accumulation of knowledge and craft. The Lighthouse of Alexandria became a symbol of engineering genius that lit sailors' way for ages.
