Güler Yücel

The painter Güler Yücel was Can Yücel's companion of forty-three years, having married him in 1956; after the poet's death she went on living in Old Datça and kept the Can Evi — house and library — alive as part of the village's cultural memory. In her 2017 book "Olduğu Gibi" (As It Was) she set down her own life and her Datça years. She died on 19 March 2020 at the age of 85 and was buried beside her husband in Datça's İskele Cemetery.

As much as Old Datça's identity as a "poets' town", the fact that this identity survived the poet himself is Güler Yücel's work: the preservation of the Can Evi and a half-century bond with the village are the trace of her patience and labour. As a painter she was one of the quiet but lasting figures of the village's artistic life.
