Ersoy Yorulmaz
Martyred teacher · ?–1994
Ersoy Yorulmaz, a young teacher from Datça, graduated from the Datça high school that today bears his name. While serving as a trainee teacher in eastern Anatolia, in the village of Taşkesen in Erzurum's Tekman district, he was abducted together with two colleagues by PKK terrorists on 11 October 1994 and killed at the age of 28. Before that month was out, by governor's approval, his name was given to the school he had graduated from; his grave is in Datça and a commemoration is held at it each year on the anniversary of his death.
Vermächtnis
He is something like Datça's oath to education: the district's long-established high school — Şehit Ersoy Yorulmaz Anadolu Lisesi — opens each morning under his name. The story of a young man who left his own school to teach in the country's hardest geography is told to the district's students generation after generation.
